Fire fighters extinguishing a huge blaze in a Dhaka slum, February 2006. Five hundred homes were damaged in the outbreak, caused by an electrical short circuit. Abir rushed to the fire in a rickshaw which sped through the narrow, dark streets. Once there, on the roof of a six-storey building, he says he was so amazed at the scene he forgot to shoot. Then he started to work. “I was amazed to see the bravery of the ordinary people as they fought the fire without proper equipment and finally managed to extinguish it with the help of the fire fighters,” says Abir. He says this is one of is favorite shots. “It has a romantic beauty – the fire fighters were helpless in the huge flames with their inadequate equipment”.
