Datuma Yusuf does not know her age. Her TB status is clear, however. The X-ray taken of her at the Bottom Hospital in Lilongwe, shows a large shadow in one of her lungs. Her body has made a huge caverty in an attempt to encapsulate the TB bacilli. Datuma will start her treatment today. “I live on a small farm,” she says. ”We grow maize, beans and pumpkins. We used to have animals, but the hyenas ate them all up. I was feeling really ill, my body hurt, and I coughed for three weeks. That´s when my brother took me to town to see the doctor.” Lilongwe 2005.
