A migrant drinks beer on debris of demolished houses before the area is submerged as part of the controversial Three Gorges Dam Project, the largest construction development in modern history. On completion of the 185 meter-high, two kilometre-long dam across the Yangtze River in 2009, 84.7 billion watts of electricity will be generated annually and it is expected to prevent flood as well. Meanwhile fertile lands and historical relics will be forever lost under the 630 square kilometres of water behind the dam. More than 1.3 million residents are being re-settled, many of them peasants who have lived generations on the land. Some will not survive to see the completion of the project and those that do will have to get used to a new way of life, away from relatives and neighbors.
