| More than one thousand Muslim youths occupied the historic main mosque in Pattani, south Thailand, for four days in June 2007 to demonstrate and demand troops be withdrawn from the area and a state of emergency lifted. Students who joined the protest hid their faces with scarves, saying they were concerned about their safety. The minority Muslim population in the region has long complained of discrimination and more than four thousand people have been reported killed since violence increased in January 2004. |
