When on 12 May 2008 a devastating earthquake hit China’s Sichuan Province,
Qiu Yan – the Photo Director of the Changjiang Daily - wanted to get
there quickly to record its effects.
"But my job did not allow me to make it to the disaster zone at the very first
moment. Most of the photographs were taken there about a week after the earthquake
had happened,” says Qiu Yan.
“I cherish every image, since they are all hard won. And - more importantly -
they record, or more precisely immortalize, the survivors: their grief, their
bravery and their selflessness."
Born in Hubei Province in China and still living there, World Press Photo winner Qiu Yan used a Canon 1D Mark II for his images. The forty-six-year-old attended a World Press Photo seminar in 2001-2003
He chose the eighth picture in his gallery as his favorite showing three generations of a family comforting each other after the loss of relatives in the earthquake.
