The Joop Swart masterclass offers twelve promising young photographers from different parts of the world a unique opportunity to meet and discuss various ethical, technical, journalistic and emotional aspects of their work. They develop practical skills and analyze their approach to photojournalism with some of the most highly- regarded professionals in the field.

The twelve are chosen from a large number worldwide who are each invited to submit a portfolio of work which is judged by independent international nominating committees.

The selected students are then asked to produce a photo essay on a given contemporary theme. The result of the assignment is presented as an exhibition with catalogue.

During the masterclass, usually in November, lectures are given and students’ work is critically evaluated and appraised. They present their photo essay and portfolio and explain their motivation and methods of working and editing.
